The basics.
Hosted (or "cloud") telephony replaces the traditional on-premises phone system with a service delivered over the internet. Instead of a physical PBX sitting in a cupboard, your phone system lives in a secure data centre — and your handsets, softphones or mobile apps connect to it from anywhere.
This means no upfront hardware costs, no expensive ISDN line rental, and the flexibility to add or remove users in minutes rather than weeks.
How a call is made.
When you make or receive a call on a hosted telephony system, the audio is converted into digital data packets and sent over your internet connection (this is called VoIP — Voice over IP). The cloud platform then routes the call to its destination — whether that's another extension in your office, a customer's mobile, or an international landline.
From the user's perspective, it just works — pick up the handset, dial the number, talk. The technical complexity is hidden.
What you need.
- A reliable internet connection — modern hosted phones use very little bandwidth per call, but consistency matters more than raw speed
- Handsets, softphones or mobile apps — your choice, or a mix of all three
- A phone number — keep your existing one (we handle the porting) or get a new one
- Nothing else — no PBX, no servers, no on-site engineer needed
What about my existing number?
We port it across. Number porting is a standard process — your existing number moves to the new platform, usually within 2-4 weeks, with minimal disruption. You keep the number your customers know.
